RYA Coastal Skipper / Yachtmaster Theory

Pre-course requirements

The Coastal/Yachtmaster theory course is an advanced navigation, weather and collision regulations program. To succeed well it requires prior knowledge to an equivalent of Day Skipper theory even though you may have a lot of practical sailing experience.

You should be familiar with plotting CTS, COG, EPs, knowledge of tidal heights, fall of tide, working out projected depths for anchoring, working out clearances under bridges, some basic weather and a basic knowledge of the International Regulations for Prevention of Collisions at Sea.


The Coastal Yachtmaster is only $675. This includes your RYA theory kit, personal tuition as required, exam and certificate but does not include navigation instruments.

The objective of the RYA Coastal Yachtmaster theory course is to develop your skills to undertake longer coastal passages by day or night. It will also enable you to plan more complex passages in unfamiliar areas and to pilot your vessel into unknown ports using navigational information. It is a course that will take you to an outstanding level of knowledge and if you combine it with the practical follow up your confidence will increase significantly and you will be well on the way to a professional standard of skippering. The syllabus includes:

  • Advanced Chart Work
  • Secondary Port Calculations
  • Course to steer including deviation and leeway
  • Advanced pilotage techniques
  • Meteorology
  • International Regulations for Prevention of Collisions at Sea
  • Safety including passage planning to SOLAS requirements and restricted visibility

    The Coastal/Yachtmaster theory course is the standard required for Coastal Yachtmaster, Yachtmaster offshore and Yachtmaster Ocean practical certificates.

    The course is made up of detailed exercises, most of which are animated demonstrations. Each exercise is followed by a set of questions which you can answer online. Once an answer is submitted feedback is instant in the form of a detailed solution. Some answers will be forwarded to your instructor who will provide personal feedback and help where required.

    Once you have successfully completed the course you will receive the RYA Certificate of Course Completion - Coastal Yachtmaster Theory.

    You can book your Coastal Yachtmaster course on line and be working straight away on the sections where the RYA pack is not needed. Your RYA pack, containing your charts, RYA almanac, RYA course notes, and course plotter, will be posted express post the same day. (Please note postage outside of Australia will incur an additional $60 for the additional cost of postage)
