Pre-course requirements

There are no pre-course requirements for the RYA Day Skipper theory course but some sailing knowledge can be helpful. Some dinghy sailing or a cruise on a larger yacht is ideal but not essential.


The cost of the course is only $675.This includes the full theory kit and navigation instruments, exam and certification.

What the course covers

The RYA Day Skipper theory course aims to develop your skills in planning and undertaking short coastal passages by day. It will improve your knowledge of seamanship, safety and coastal navigation and is recognised as a world class sailing and boating qualification. It is an important foundation course for working with tides and is essential if you are planning to develop your sailing qualifications to coastal or offshore yachtmaster. The course covers:

Day Skipper.

  • Electronic Navigation
  • Definition of Longitude and Latitude
  • Safety
  • Chart terminology and notes
  • Tidal theory including heights and streams
  • Plotting estimate of position and course to steer allowing for tide
  • Pilotage techniques
  • Basic rules of the road
  • Basic weather
  • Passage Planning to SOLAS requirements
  • Vessel operations

  • Once you have completed the course you will feel safer and have more confidence in your ability and after completing an RYA practical course you be on the way to being a first class skipper for very reasonable cost.This course also represents recognised prior learning towards the international certificate of competency.

    More information

    The course is made up of a series of exercises, most of which are animated for easy learning. It is not based on power point slides or videos. Each exercise is followed by a set of questions which you can answer online. Once an answer is submitted the feedback is instant in the form of a detailed answer page with the solution fully set out.

    Some answers will be forwarded to your instructor who will provide additional personal feedback and help where required.

    If you wish to progress through the RYA/YA sailing scheme completion of the Day Skipper theory course is essential and it is a requirement for completing a practical Day Skipper.
